Illustrated Gingerbread Recipe

My love affair with gingerbread stems from an early age, cutting out shapes in the kitchen with my mum, or enjoying nibbling the little head and legs off a gingerbread man when we were out at the shops.
As I got older I started baking for myself, following recipes and attempting to bake and decorate more adventurous shapes, even attempting gingerbread houses. It was a lot of fun, but they always seemed to be somewhat lacking in structural integrity. I remember trying to construct one and it collapsed so spectacularly that I decided to pivot and make it into a stable (more of a rustic ruin really!) for a nativity scene instead.
But really for me it's all about the enjoyment of the baking and the flavours. The smell of gingerbread dough in the oven is so delightful, and fills your house with such a cosy, comforting aroma. I often bake with my little nieces, and have tried and tested this very recipe with them, which they love. I'd added a little cinnamon, to give it a slightly more festive feel, and a little extra warmth.
What better way to treasure a beloved recipe than to have it framed in the kitchen as a piece of wall art, ready to refer to whenever the impulse to bake some gingerbread arises! I used watercolour to illustrate each ingredient by hand, as well as some cheeky little gingerbread men and a pretty, decorated house. Let's face it, I managed to achieve with watercolour a rather more successful gingerbread house than I've ever been able to physically build with the biscuit in real life!
This beautiful little illustrated print is available in my shop, ready to give as a gift to the keen baker in your family, foodie friends, or anyone who, like me, loves creating delicious memories in the kitchen with little ones.
